Description
The discovery of Iceland, according to medieval sources, took place in the second half of the 9th century A.D. when Norwegians on their way to the Faroes were driven off course and came upon an unknown land further to the west. There they found Irish Christian hermits, who left as soon as the pagan Norsemen arrived, and thus the latter are usually looked upon as the original permanent inhabitants. The first of these settlers is traditionally considered to have been Ingolfur Arnarson who together with his foster-brother left Norway for Iceland, and settled in 874.On the occasion of the 1100th Anniversary of Settlement, sedlabanki Islands (The Central Bank of Iceland) has issued these two silver commemorative coins. The coins 1,000 & 500 Kronur were designed by an Icelandic artist Mr. Th. Magnusson and were struck by the Royal Mint of Great Britain. The 500 Kronur struck in .925 silver 35 mm with Rev: Female and cow. The 1,000 Kronur struck in .925 silver 38mm Rev: Two Vikings and fire.
